Keep Your Hot Water Flowing with These Easy Maintenance Tips
Your water heater works hard every day, but it’s easy to forget about it—until there’s a problem! With a little routine maintenance, you can keep it running efficiently and avoid sudden breakdowns. Here’s how to take care of your water heater and extend its lifespan.
Flush the Tank Annually
Over time, sediment builds up at the bottom of your water heater, reducing efficiency and possibly damaging the tank. Flushing it once a year helps remove buildup and keep it running smoothly.
How to do it: 1. Turn off the power (or gas) and let the water cool. 2. Connect a hose to the drain valve and let the water run out. 3. Refill the tank and turn it back on.
Check the Anode Rod
The anode rod helps prevent rust inside the tank. If it’s corroded, your tank could start rusting from the inside out. Check it every 2-3 years and replace it if it looks worn.
Test the Temperature & Pressure Relief Valve
This valve is a safety feature that prevents too much pressure from building up inside the tank. Test it by lifting the valve’s lever—water should release briefly. If nothing happens, it may need to be replaced.
Adjust the Temperature for Efficiency
Setting your water heater to 120°F is hot enough for daily use while reducing energy costs and preventing scalding.
Insulate Your Water Heater
If you have an older tank, adding an insulation blanket can help reduce heat loss and improve efficiency—especially in colder months.
